Jim Cooper, president of Maplesoft

Vehicle systems will become more complicated and hybridised. We’ll see a lot more fly by-wire systems; more acausal components; the percentage of efficiencies will become more important; and multi-discipline systems will dominate. Drivetrain departments in particular will become multi-disciplined as design becomes more concerned with overall efficiency, mechanical and electrical design will no longer be separate disciplines.
Software tools will work that way as well. Control engineers will have to work with the electronics and heat transfer, say. There’s going to be a shortage of good engineers.
