Nanjing plans for MG plant unclear

June 2007

Nanjing Autobile Company’s plan to build 50,000 cars a year at its Longbridge, UK, site by 2010 now looks uncertain, writes John Mortimer.

At the end of May three pre-production MG TF roadsters rolled from a screened-off production line to symbolise a dubious start of production.

Nanjing said: “The production lines have been modified to allow the recommencement of manufacturing. A highly experienced management, engineering and production team is now in place, ready to relaunch MG into the marketplace later this year.”

Nanjing’s plan calls for 15,000 MG TF sports cars. But it is not clear when this figure will be reached. Insiders say Nanjing MG will build 3,000 cars in the first year and the 15,000 target will be met by 2008.

But how it will do this is unclear. The former MG Rover site employs just 130 people. Although there is no date for the start of production, Nanjing expects a workforce of 250 to be in place by the end of the year.
