Improved all-wheel drive sharpens Mitsubishi Lancer

July 2007

Mitsubishi has developed the all-wheel drive system that will feature in the Lancer Evolution C-segment performance sedan, due out in the autumn.

Engineers at the Japanese OEM have added an active centre differential, active yaw control and sports ABS to the Lancer. Integrated management of these systems regulates the torque and braking force at each wheel.

“The systems make driving more intuitive and create vehicle behaviour that faithfully reflects the driver’s inputs. They allow drivers of all abilities to enjoy sporty motoring with confidence,” said Mitsubishi.

By incorporating yaw rate feedback control, the system controls each wheel under a wide range of driving conditions. The active centre differential has an electronically-controlled hydraulic multi-plate clutch. The system regulates the differential limiting action between free and locked states to optimise the torque split between the front and rear axles.

“Driven by a top-level tester, the new Lancer Evolution is about 1.5 seconds faster around our 2.4km handling circuit than its predecessor,” said Mitsubishi.

The car will also get a dual-clutch transmission (DCT). Getrag-Ford Transmissions will supply the six-speed wet-clutch unit.
