Cabin filter takes out dust and diesel particles

July 2007

Mann & Hummel’s latest cabin filter increases filtration and retention of fine particles such as dust and diesel exhaust particles.

Interior air quality is becoming an important issue for OEMs as more buyers expect HVAC systems to prevent pollution, pollen and bad smells from entering the cabin.

The enhanced performance of Mann & Hummel’s system comes from a high proportion of synthetic nanofibres in the filter media. The new design will trap particles ranging from millionths to thousandths of a millimetre: nanometre to micron range.

Mann & Hummel’s head of cabin filter development, Dr Pius Trautmann, said: “We’re focusing our attention on particles with a diameter of less than 2.5 microns. These enter the respiratory system and, depending on their type and concentration, may cause or aggravate various medical conditions.”

An activated charcoal layer prevents odours from entering the cabin, by trapping the gaseous molecules, including hydrocarbons and ozone.

Production of the filters begins this autumn.
