Federal plans in-cylinder pressure sensing for diesels

November 2007

Federal Mogul is working with Siemens VDO on in-cylinder pressure sensing. It plans to begin mass-production of the pressure-sensor for diesel applications in 2009-10.

Tighter emissions regulations require tighter control of the combustion. By taking pressure measurements while the engine is running, the software can adapt injection events in real-time.

Siemens VDO board member Klaus Egger said: “We’re working together to introduce closed control combustion systems. We have several customer development projects at an advanced stage.”

The pressure sensors are most easily integrated into the glow-plug. VDO does not manufacture glow-plugs at present, but Federal-Mogul does.

Denso and NGK are developing systems. Beru will start production in 2008, supplying GM.
