25-28 January 2010

Exhaust systems: 8th International CTI Forum

Stuttgart, Germany

Comparing emissions-reduction concepts and looking forwards to the challenges of reducing NOx, CO2 and particulates. The forum will take an in-depth look at EGR, SCR and optimised filter systems. There’s also an interesting-looking presentation on how emission limits in Europe and the US are developed.

26 - 29 January

SAE 2010 Government-Industry Meeting

Washington DC, US

This annual event should be especially interesting this time. Engineers and lawmakers gather to discuss everything from policy on renewable fuels to biomechanics and accident research. It’s not clear yet who the keynote speakers will be, but somebody senior from the US Environmental Protection Agency will be in attendance.

4 February

NVH of hybrid and electric vehicles

Saint-Ouen, France

This event opens with a speech by Ladimir Prince, PSA’s advanced engineering chief for alternative drivetrains. A colleague of his shares ideas on cooling. Somebody from Renault talks about electric vehicle sound quality and there are good papers from Rieter, FEV and Valeo.

10 - 11 February

Hybrid vehicle technologies symposium

San Diego, US

We like the look of the panel discussions planned at this conference in California. Moderated by Sherif Marakby, Ford’s chief engineer for hybrids, there will be a panel of battery and systems suppliers fielding questions from delegates. A good chance to hear them discuss chemistries and strategies.

24 - 25 February

Braunschweig hybrid vehicles and energy management symposium

Braunschweig, Germany

This event attracts interesting speakers from the main German OEMs. The final list of speakers will only be available in mid-January, but it will be worth checking the website to see if there will be anybody from Volkswagen, BMW, Mercedes-Benz or Opel talking strategy or getting into technical details.

18 - 19 March

Alternative energies for the automotive industry

Poitiers, France

The 2009 event was good, so high hopes for this one. It’s put together in partnership with the French Environment and Energy Management Agency. More details on the speakers when we have them.

13 - 15 April

SAE 2010 World Congress

Detroit, US

The breadth of this event is enormous, covering electronics, emissions, computer-aided engineering, management, materials, powertrain and safety. We like the look of the “Chat with the Experts” sessions, which cover crash simulation, fatigue analysis and Autosar electronics.

29 - 30 April

31st Vienna international motor symposium

Vienna, Austria

If you only attend one powertrain event in 2010, we recommend this one. Speakers have not yet been announced, but there is usually a very strong mix of high-ranking German and Japanese engineers giving very informative presentations on market trends, combustion and aftertreatment. Tends to fill up, so book early to secure your place.

19 - 20 May

9th international conference on turbochargers and turbocharging

London, UK

If you work in powertrain development, it’s hard to see how this event isn’t relevant to you. Held every four years, this is the big event in forced induction. Downsizing will undoubtedly be a dominating theme.

26 - 27 May

Diesel engines: facing the competitive challenges

Rouen, France

This event, held every two years, gets a lot of good speakers from the French OEMs. And if you’re working in diesel powertrain development, it probably pays to understand how Renault and PSA Peugeot Citroën are doing things. You can look forward to papers on future combustion concepts, gas exchange, simulation and calibration tools and prospective market developments.

30 May - 4 June

FISITA World Automotive Congress

Budapest, Hungary

The call for papers has opened. The theme is cars and sustainability, and the aim is to provide engineers with the knowledge to push forward the development of cleaner, safer, more attractive vehicles. Topics will include testing and simulation, among others.
