| Developed in partnership with Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, PSA Peugeot Citroën has unveiled its new 4x4 models. The Peugeot 4007 and Citroën C-Crosser share a platform with the Mitsubishi Outlander which was the first of the three to be released. Mitsubishi’s long history of producing off-roaders has helped PSA to join this market segment for the first time. Sales of more than one million units in 2005 mean that SUVs account for six per cent of the European passenger vehicle market. PSA is looking for sales of 30,000 units.
Mitsubishi had already begun development work before PSA joined the program in 2005 and will now benefit from higher volumes as all three models will be built at its plant in Japan . PSA also wins because the collaboration meant lower design and development costs and reduced time to market. Adapting the platform for its own models, PSA in particular refined brakes, steering, suspension, rear axles and tyres to give its variants the on-road characteristics specific to each brand.

In profile and from the back the new pair are clearly the same but each is styled differently and the faces instantly recognizable as Peugeot and Citroën.
Powertrains are shared; both have the 2.2 litre HDi diesel engine co-developed with Ford. It produces 115kW (156hp) and 380Nm (280lbft) and can run on 30 per cent biodiesel. A diesel particulate filter is standard. A six speed manual gearbox provides either two or four-wheel drive transmission, with a (differential) lock setting for low friction surfaces. All three modes are enabled using a control fitted behind the gear stick.
The 4007 and the C-Crosser are exactly the same length – 4640mm – and with a third row of seats, can accommodate up to seven occupants. Launch date is summer 2007.
