Jaguar racing signs technical partnership with UGS

August 2004

The Jaguar Racing Formula One team has renewed a three-year technical partnership for product life cycle management specialist, UGS, to provide IT software and consultancy services including process improvements to the design, manufacture, and race environment for future racing cars.

UGS will work with Jaguar Racing’s engineers to improve processes across the product lifecycle. UGS “Teamcenter Project” software will improve programme management capabilities by linking departmental project plans in a real-time collaborative web environment. CAD design improvements will be achieved by upgrading to UGS’ next-generation digital product development system, NX2, providing Jaguar’s designers with more powerful tools. In addition, UGS will assist with the migration from the UNIX to Windows platform.

UGS “Teamcenter Engineering” forms the digital backbone for the design of the car by controlling engineering workflows, managing CAD data, and for the creation of a master bill of materials that is used companywide. Advanced configuration management capabilities are planned for the new R6 racing car.

One of the key aims of the three year technical partnership will be to create a web enabled collaborative environment based on UGS “Teamcenter Community” software. This will include live on-screen communications between the track and factory at race events. UGS ‘Vis Conference’ software will enable both parties to view, mark-up and manipulate CAD geometry, thereby speeding up the resolution of faults and subsequent manufacturing of urgent replacement parts. ‘ Vis ’ software will also enable Jaguar Racing’s potential sponsors to view digital mock-ups of full Formula One cars complete with marketing logos.

Jaguar Racing’s IT and Business Systems Manager, Matt Cadieux, commented on the partnership: ‘UGS’ software is a key enabler for process improvements and it has been critical for the design and manufacture of our ‘R5’ Formula One racing car. We are excited about the opportunities to further use UGS’ software to improve our business processes for our next car, the ‘R6’, and beyond.”

UGS’ UK Managing Director, John Hurley said: “We are pleased that Jaguar Racing has again chosen UGS to provide them with the best that PLM has to offer – improving efficiency in not only the design but manufacturing process.”
