Lotus goes for the power of the wind

17 April 2007

Sports car maker Lotus has submitted a request for a "scoping opinion" to the local government authority at its plant in Norfolk, England, to build a wind farm that could supply all of the power for its manufacturing site.

The automaker has joined up with the power group Ecotricity in plans for a wind farm at the company's Hethel manufacturing plant and test track. The pair has sent in the request to South Norfolk District Council to gauge local views on the scheme before submitting a formal planning application.

Group Lotus chief executive officer Mike Kimberley said: "By sourcing our electricity needs for our Hethel headquarters in Norfolk from these wind turbines, we can contribute to reducing our corporate CO2 emissions dramatically and provide a definitive demonstration of our commitment to the environment."

The Lotus wind power scheme is likely to need three turbines that would be sited in the centre of the test track.
