A higher-power version of Europe's newest two-litre diesel engine is to be made available later this year. The M1D family of power units is also likely to be expanded to provide further versions, according to Renault.
The French group has revealed plans for a 127 kW version of the 110 kW motor that went into production late last year – and says its new flexible manufacturing facilities are likely to pave the way for further variants to be developed in the near future.
A company spokesman said: “Progress in the diesel engine market has led to significant reduction in CO2 emissions and customers are demanding more driving pleasure and comfort.
“Along with Nissan, our alliance partner, we have decided to develop a new engine family in order to comply with future customer requirements as well as preparing for more stringent emission regulations."
In addition to challenging targets for fuel consumption and emission levels, specifications have been focused on performance and NVH in order to reach the top-class level in the 1.9 to 2.2-litre diesel segment.
“The ability to install the engine in small vehicles was also included in specifications that required a very compact design." the spokesman said.
Output reaches a specific figure of 63.7 kW/l while low-end torque has been optimised to provide 90 per cent of the maximum available from only 1,600rpm.
