By Dean Slavnich

Following a brief absence, SsangYong has returned to the UK market after making available its Rexton SUV model.

SsangYong hopes the Rexton SUV will warm UK customers to the brand
SsangYong Rexton

The South Korean carmaker hopes the five-door 4x4 will help establish the brand in the UK.

UK customers will have the choice of two engines from launch, a 2.9 litre diesel and a 3.2 litre petrol. The diesel option produces 120 ps (88 kW) at 4,000 rpm and delivers 253 Nm (184 lb ft) of torque at 2,400 rpm, consequently allowing the Rexton to power to a 158 km/h (98 mph) top speed. The diesel derivative covers 30.4 mpg on combined and emits around 300 g/km of CO2.

The petrol unit produces 220 ps (161 kW) at 6,000 rpm and 313 Nm (231 lb ft) of torque at 3,000 rpm, ensuring a top speed of 183 km/h (114 mph). The 3.2 litre engine has a combined fuel consumption figure of 18.8 mpg and spews 351 g/km of CO2.
