By enhancing the factory, Toyota hopes to ramp-up production of
Avensis and Corolla models from 220,000 units a year to 285,000 while
still maintaining a two-shift working pattern.
The move has been welcomed by the UK government. Prime Minster Tony Blair
said: “This is good news, not just for the company but also for
the UK automotive industry as it gears up for the challenges of developing
new and cleaner vehicle technologies of which Toyota is at the forefront.”
Since the start of production in 1992, Toyota has built over 1.6 million
vehicles at Burnaston and over 1.5 million engines at Deeside. The second
largest carmaker in the world has so far invested €2.5bn ($3bn) in
UK manufacturing operations.
