June 2004

Automotive manufacturing in the UK was given a €75mn ($92mn) boost last month when Toyota announced plants to further invest capital in its Burnaston plant.

More investment by Toyota will see the Burnaston plant roll out 65,000 more vehicles per year

By enhancing the factory, Toyota hopes to ramp-up production of Avensis and Corolla models from 220,000 units a year to 285,000 while still maintaining a two-shift working pattern.

The move has been welcomed by the UK government. Prime Minster Tony Blair said: “This is good news, not just for the company but also for the UK automotive industry as it gears up for the challenges of developing new and cleaner vehicle technologies of which Toyota is at the forefront.”

Since the start of production in 1992, Toyota has built over 1.6 million vehicles at Burnaston and over 1.5 million engines at Deeside. The second largest carmaker in the world has so far invested €2.5bn ($3bn) in UK manufacturing operations.
