A sporty number for Saturn

March 2004

By Dean Slavnich

GM has confirmed that within the next two years Saturn will add a sports car model to its ever-expanding vehicle line-up.

It is thought Saturn's new sports car model will be based on the Curve concept

The new car will manufactured on GM’s much acclaimed Kappa architecture, a platform that took the Detroit show by storm after rolling out the new Pontiac Solstice, Chevy Nomad concept and Saturn Curve concept.

The unofficial line is that Saturn’s new sports car will be based on the Curve, though GM chiefs have refused to confirm this rumour.

Adding further substance to the Curve concept-to-production story is that Saturn’s new sports car model will be manufacturered at the Wilmington, US, plant, the home of the Solstice.

The news of another new model for Saturn has got the most experienced GM chiefs excited. An ecstatic Bob Lutz, GM vice chairman, said: "The future sports car will serve as a halo vehicle for Saturn. This is a game-changer for Saturn. It is the first vehicle of its type for the growing brand and showcases a dramatic new styling direction."

Saturn currently has plans to introduce three new models during the next 36 months, including the Relay, a crossover sport van due later this year, a new midsize vehicle based off GM’s Epsilon platform in 2006 and a larger SUV.
