  VW automates its ECU testing

June 2007

VW has developed an automatic optical inspection system, TOM MagicControl, for infotainment ECUs. The OEM worked with Goepel Electronics of Germany.

Testing electronics is often a time-consuming manual process for engineers. The new system is faster and has a good repeatability and high precision. It can also operate without supervision.

Goepel said: “VW is using TOM MagicControl for tests not possible before, such as repeated performance measurements at night, automatic preconfigurations by the operation robot and symbol recognition.”

The system comprises an operation arm, high-resolution cameras and CAN rest-bus simulation. Optical feedbacks on the ECUs are detected by cameras and automatically analysed.

Future developments will look at infotainment devices.
