  Cummins cuts off-highway emissions

June 2007

Engine firm Cummins is making progress toward the stringent 2011 EPA Tier 4 and EU Stage IIIB emissions regulations. The rules for off-road equipment replace engine-measured emissions with tailpipe-measured emissions as a single system.

In 2011 EPA regulations will require a 90 per cent reduction in particulate matter and 45 per cent reduction in NOx and hydrocarbons for engines of 130kW to 560kW (174 to 751hp).

In 2012 regulations extend to include 75 hp (56 kW) engines. The particulate reduction target is the same, but NOx emissions cuts are less severe.

Ric Kleine, vice-president of Cummins’ off-highway division, said: “Cummins has invested in technologies that extend from air intake to exhaust aftertreatment, including common rail systems, controls and turbocharging so that we can integrate all the key subsystems more effectively.”

Cummins has developed filters and SCR systems also.
