  Buses test full-fat fuel

June 2007

Finnish oil company Neste has developed a biomass-based diesel to reduce vehicle emissions. Scania will test it on six city buses.

Neste said the animal fat-based fuel, NExBTL, could cut NOx emissions by 20 per cent and particulates by 30 per cent compared to standard diesel. Fossil CO2 emissions could be cut by as much as 80 per cent.

Scania R&D chief Hasse Johansson said: “Our lab tests corroborate that bio-based synthetic diesel has potential. Switching to such fuel can improve emissions.”

Researchers will study the effect of different blends of the biofuel on emissions. Initial tests will run the vehicles on around 30 per cent NExBTL, gradually moving to 100 per cent.
