  BorgWarner doubles its dual-clutch capacity

27 February 2008

Transmissions group BorgWarner has doubled its capacity for manufacturing dual-clutch transmissions at its plant at Arnstadt in Germany.

The group has spent almost €26 million doubling the manufacturing area of the current plant to more than 10,000 square metres, and has also installed a research laboratory and a test track for evaluating new technologies before bringing them into production.

Arnstadt has been producing dual clutch systems since 2003 and has now made more than a million. The company expects demand to increase by 500 per cent through to 2013 and land has been set aside next to the expanded plant for a further doubling of production later.

Dr Bernd Matthes, president and general manager of BorgWarner Transmission Systems, said: "The worldwide growth in demand for dual-clutch transmissions is very encouraging. There will be a further increase in the market share for dual-clutch transmissions as more and more customers enjoy the benefits of the fuel economy and dynamic performance of this impressive technology."
