Metaldyne brings patented Dynaturn process to Europe

May 2005
By William Kimberley

Metaldyne is to use its patented Dynaturn process to supply mini-corner modules for a North American carmaker in Europe, marking the introduction of the process to the European market. Metaldyne’s Barcelona, Spain operation will manufacture the chassis modules, beginning in 2006. The contract is worth $40 million annually at full production.

Each mini-corner module consists of a knuckle, a bearing, a dust shield and a wheel hub with studs installed, which are assembled and post-assembly machined. The Dynaturn process will be utilised to improve lateral run-out to 13.5 microns, which significantly improves brake performance and reduces warranty cost issues.

The patented DynaTurn system, used to manufacture wheel-end modules, minimises vibration and brake noise, and increases customer satisfaction.  The unique technology reduces stack-up tolerances and lateral run out from 30 microns to 10 microns or better. The system refers to the finish turning of the wheel hub flange surface as part of a knuckle, bearing and hub assembly.  The process, which is independent of bearing type, provides a low lateral run-out flange surface for mating with a rotor. The low lateral run-out minimises brake noise and vibration, and reduces brake warranty issues. Metaldyne's design can also reduce the weight and cost of the assembly by integrating the knuckle with a low-cost generation 1 bearing and hub unit.  As a result of this process, the DynaTurn system offers a smoother ride and greater overall driver satisfaction.

“Dynaturn is a proven success in North America and we’re pleased to bring this cutting-edge technology into the European market,” said Tim Leuliette, Metaldyne chairman, president and CEO. “Metaldyne will continue to expand its presence in Europe with more of these innovative powertrain and chassis solutions in the future.”

With 140 employees, Metaldyne Barcelona currently manufactures steering knuckles, crankshaft dampers and isolation pulleys for various customers in Europe. This new business more than doubles the revenues of the Metaldyne Barcelona operation.
