Glass to metal seals protect delicate components

October 2006

Materials and components group Schott has developed hermetically sealed glass-to-metal seals for packaging delicate automotive electronic equipment such as crash sensors and igniter units for airbags.

The metal part of the package is used to feed electrical connections through, while the glass acts as an insulator.

Schott says the glass-to-metal seals are more resistant than plastic enclosures to the effects of high and low temperatures, as well as being resistant to oil and chemicals.

“These benefits allow us to meet the demands of the automotive industry for a product lifetime of more than 20 years,” said Thomas Pfeiffer of the automotive products division.
