  Ryton plant to close early

11 October 2006

PSA Peugeot Citröen has announced that its Ryton plant is to close in January 2007, sooner than originally planned.

When the first statement of intent was made in April, mid 2007 was given as the time when production would cease. However, in recent weeks nearly a quarter of the remaining workforce has asked to leave, forcing the change in timing.

In 1999 Ryton lost the 306 model but output rose with increasing popularity of the 206. A fourth seven day shift was introduced in 2002 and output peaked the following year at 209,607 units.

Better days for the Ryton plant

Production has continued to fall as the 206 has aged and Ryton was not awarded the new 207. The plant now turns out only 160 cars per day and the balance of the once 2300 strong workforce are free to leave as and when they choose.

PSA says its resource centre has more than 6000 pre-qualified job opportunities available for Ryton staff, with a further 100 within the Coventry area.
