Isuzu and Toyota sign agreement on collaboration

16 November 2006

Isuzu and Toyota have signed an agreement stating that they will study the benefits of business collaboration. The two Japanese auto makers want to co-operate in areas such as research and development and production.

Between them, the two companies will focus on three specific areas: small diesel engines; emission control technology and devices for diesel engines; environmental technologies, including alternative fuels.

Isuzu will assume a leading role in the first two areas, with Toyota heading up the third. As part of the agreement, Toyota will own 5.9 per cent of Isuzu shares (100 million).

Increased global competition has been cited as the main reason for this development.
