Restructuring to see Golf production at only two plants

22 November 2006

Volkswagen has announced plans to restructure manufacturing operations at its Brussels plant. Most important is the proposal that production of the Golf there will cease; at present this model is produced in three sites in Western Europe. VW is in talks with employee representatives to reduce this to two: Mosel and Wolfsburg.

VW has cited issues with market saturation in Western Europe, excess capacity and limited exports because of the weak dollar.
It is already in the process of executing a severe restructuring of its facilities in Germany, focusing on the shedding of 20,000 jobs. Further measures are planned.

The company says that it must address capacity utilisation throughout all of its plants in the region.

Despite these developments, VW says that it intended to stay at the Brussels location and urged to all involved to provide it with constructive support in the light of the difficult environment.”
