Jaguar confirms XF as replacement for S-Type

29 November 2006

Jaguar has announced that the S-Type saloon will be replaced by the XF, which makes its public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September next year.

The new model was designed and developed at Jaguar’s engineering centre at Whitley in Coventry . Like the S-Type, it will be made at the Castle Bromwich plant in Birmingham which also manufactures the aluminium XK and XJ.

The S-Type was first shown to the public in 1998 and has since sold 270,000 units. However, it has struggled in the executive segment against competitors such as the BMW 5 Series, compounded in European markets by the lack of a diesel engine until 2004. The styling was also criticised by some as being overly retro.

S-Type gives way to XF

However, the new XK is very highly regarded and Jaguar expects the XF to be no different. Bibiana Boerio, managing director of Jaguar cars, said: “The Jaguar XF is a new sports saloon that will challenge people to think again about Jaguar as daring and different. Our new XK sports car has been very well received and is enjoying great success. We are moving on to the next stage of Jaguar’s new design era – and if you like the new XK, just wait until you see the new Jaguar XF!”

The first customers will take delivery in spring 2008.
