Production at the historic Windsor Castings site in Ontario, Canada, has come to an end today with the last castings for Ford vehicles being produced by the 73-year-old plant. In its lifetime, the plant has made more than 50 million cylinder block castings and crankshafts for Ford engines. Ford announced its decision to close the Windsor plant last year and has recently announced a further closure at its other North American castings plant at Cleveland in Ohio. "The company's decision to move away from in-house casting operations is based on a thorough analysis of our business and a need to focus on our core operations," said Adrian Vito, site manager at Windsor for Ford of Canada. "While difficult, these are the right actions for Ford's future." In recent times, Windsor has employed around 500 people, making cylinder block castings for 4.2-litre V6 engines and crankshafts for 4.2-litre V6, 5.4-litre V8, 3.0-litre V6, 4.6-litre V8 and 2.3-litre engines. All steel used in the castings is recycled material.
