| Diesels will outsell hybrids in US, says report | 25 May 2007 |

| Sales of diesels and gasoline hybrids in the United States are set to reach 2.7 million by 2012, or 15 per cent of the market, but diesels will outsell hybrids, says a new report by UBS and Ricardo. The report, Is diesel set to boom in the US?, says that hybrid gasoline seems to the favoured technology for light vehicle engines in the US at present, with the benefit of enabling its owners to be seen to be green. But high manufacturing costs will eventually tell against this route in favour of diesel, even if the costs of complex after-treatment are taken into account. The report says that the conditions "may now be right for a big acceleration in diesel sales in the North American market" and that diesels will outsell hybrids by 1.5 million to 1.2 million. European and other global carmakers will benefit particularly from this, it adds.
