Suzuki signs deal to build Russian car plant

11 June 2007

Suzuki is to build a car assembly plant in St Petersburg to meet growing demand for vehicles from Russia. The plant will be at the Shushary industrial zone.

An agreement between Suzuki and the Russian Economic Development and Trade Ministry was signed on 8 June.

Suzuki will invest €90 million in the new plant, which is scheduled to start operation in the second half of 2009. Models planned for production are the Grand Vitara compact SUV and the SX4 sport crossover.

The plant wil employ 500 people to begin with and production in the first year will be just 5,000 vehicles, rising to 30,000 a year.
