Toyota's plug-in car gets go-ahead for road trials

26 July 2007

Toyota has become the first manufacturer to have a plug-in hybrid-electric vehicle certified for use on public roads in Japan. The company plans to try the Plug-In HV model on roads in North America and Europe too.

The vehicle has a longer electric motor cruise function than previous hybrid vehicles, Toyota says, which will enable it to make trips of up to 13km using electric power only.

The car's battery can be topped up from the domestic electricity mains, with full charge within 90 minutes at standard 200V.

GM, with its Volt architecture, has also been pushing the boundaries of hybrid vehicle range with a plug-in option.
