  Fiat offers immediate environmental testing

11 September 2007

Fiat has teamed up with IT giant Microsoft to offer a system that will tell drivers how environmentally friendly - or otherwise - they have been on their most recent road trips.

The Eco Drive system will be available on Fiat cars next year, but is being unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show this week.

The system collects together environmental data from the car, such as CO2 emission levels for individual trips. The data can be downloaded by plugging a USB device into the Blue & Me communications port in the car.

Fiat says that conventional environmental bench tests tend to see the car used in idealised circumstances, and that the new device will enable drivers to see the effect of their driving style on "real" environmental performance.
