Iranians submit proposal for Islamic car

30 October 2007

Iran has put forward a plan to manufacture a car with a "joint brand" of Islamic countries. The proposal has gone to the economic committee of the Organisation of Islamic Countries, OIC.

The idea originates from the Iranian carmaker Iran Khodro and was suggested by its CEO, Manouchehr Manteghi, at a reception for ambassadors of Islamic states during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, which ended earlier in October.

Iran's ministry of foreign affairs has now followed this up by submitting the proposal to the OIC D8 economic committee, which has representatives from Bangladesh, Egypt, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Indonesia and Turkey, as well as Iran.

The proposal, according to the Iranian news agency YJC, would see the formation of a company composed of the members of the G8 group.
