Gas explosion costs Porsche 911 production

25 February 2008

Porsche is estimating that it will lose two or three days' production of the 911 series following a gas explosion in the paintshop at the Zuffenhausen plant in Stuttgart this morning.

Early indications are that gas escaped from a PVC fusion oven that is used in paint drying. Two employees were taken to hospital with minor injuries but were later discharged.

Production was disrupted because the sprinkler system at the plant activated, putting parts of the 911 production line under water as well as the paintshop. Body, upholstery, and engine lines were not affected, and models such as Cayenne and Boxster that are not produced at Zuffenhausen are also not hit by the stoppage.

The plant is at present making around 160 of the 911 series a day.
