Gas explosion costs Porsche 911 production

29 February 2008

Porsche will resume production of the 911 series on Monday 3 March following the gas explosion in the paintshop at the Zuffenhausen plant in Stuttgart on 25 February.

A PVC fusion oven was badly damaged in the fire that followed, but Porsche says that the material damage of "several hundred thousand Euros" is largely covered by insurance.

The investigation has put the explosion down to "a technical fault" and none of the other ovens in the paintshop area is affected.

The plant is at present making around 160 of the 911 series a day. Porsche says that the backlog of 800 vehicles will be made up in the course of the current business year.
