Changes bring Nissan's pickup higher safety rating

14 March 2008

Nissan's Navara pickup has gained a revised safety rating from the EuroNCAP assessment body following modifications made after it received a poor rating last month.

Nissan has modified all production vehicles and has begun a service schedule that will see vehicles back to 2005 fitted with an upgrade.

EuroNCAP's criticism of the Navara and other pickups came in the first batch of testing of this kind of vehicle by the European safety organisation.

The Navara received a struck-through one-star rating for the delayed firing of the airbag in the frontal impact test. Nissan has now developed new airbag software that gives better occupant protection.

The changes have meant that EuroNCAP has now awarded the vehicle a three-star rating for this test. It has also revised upwards the rating for child protection on the Navara to four stars, but pedestrian protection remains at two stars.

EuroNCAP said: "Nissan have acted responsibly and promptly in response to our findings. EuroNCAP hopes that by releasing this new result it will speed up the service campaign and ensure that all Navaras are upgraded to the higher safety specification."
