| BMW and the Fiat Group have signed a memorandum of understanding that could see them sharing design and componentry on their Mini and Alfa Romeo models. Details of the talks between the two companies have not been announced, but a joint news release cites collaboration on "areas of architectures and components". Friedrich Eichiner, BMW board member responsible for corporate and brand issues, who signed the deal on behalf of BMW, said: "We are currently examining with the Fiat Group possibilities for the joint use of components and systems in Mini and Alfa Romeo vehicles in order to achieve economies of scale and thus cost reductions within the framework of our strategy." The memorandum was signed on behalf of the Fiat group by Alfredo Altavilla, senior vice-president for business development and CEO of Fiat Powertrain Technologies. Group CEO Sergio Marchionne said: "The proposed co-operation with BMW is a significant milestone of our strategy of alliances." Though no details are being announced, the pair said the results of collaborative
discussions would probably be known by the end of 2008.
