Ford is introducing a system that will enable fleet controllers to monitor driver behaviour and encourage safer practices. The system will be available on popular fleet vehicles from the middle of next year, Ford said. The MyKey technology is a programmable system that allows fleet operators to limit top speeds, control maximum settings on radios and stop drivers from switching off safety features such as roll stability control and traction control. Other features include the ability to set warning "chimes" when certain speeds are exceeded and to encourage seatbelt wearing through audio and other controls. Ford fleet marketing manager Gerry Koss said: "MyKey gives fleet owners peace of mind by providing a simple, affordable way to help reinforce safe driving policies and manage at-risk drivers. For fleet owners, safe driving behaviour by vehicle operators is a bottom-line issue." MyKey uses some of the technology available already in the SecuriLock anti-theft system. The system can be programmed through the vehicle message centre which updates SecuriLock. Options include the possibility of stopping the vehicle sound system from working unless the driver is wearing a seatbelt. It can also provide an earlier empty fuel warning, coming on at 75 miles to empty rather than the current 50.
