German groups Henkel and Dürr are getting together to develop Henkel's Aquence autophoretic dip coating process for wider industrial use. Dürr is to bring its paint systems knowledge to optimise the process for delivering the coatings to a wider range of industries, starting in the non-automotive markets where Henkel is strongest. The Aquence technology replaces the combination of pretreatment and electro-dipping with a single-stage process. It uses no heavy metals or emits virtually no volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The "auto-deposition" technology produces protective coatings of variable thickness directly from the water-based emulsion on to the degreased surfaces without needing to put an electric charge through the surface. No phosphate or chromate pretreatment is needed, and components containing both ferrous materials and plastics can be coated, with the coating applying only to the ferrous parts.
