Visteon says that a new design of internal heat exchanger for automotive air conditioning systems increases the cooling power in a vehicle by 14 per cent. The new heat exchanger replaces part of the suction and liquid refrigerant lines in a traditional R134a system, and exchanges energy in a counter-flow arrangement. When combined with tuning of the expansion device settings, it increases cooling performance by up to 14 per cent and operating efficiency by up to 12 per cent. The concept works too with the newer R1234yf refrigerant, Visteon says. The first applications for the new heat exchanger will come in systems delivered in the first quarter of 2009.
