Tyre pressure monitor integrated with global positioning

5 January 2009

Chinese automotive components group Lionax is claiming a world-first with a device that integrates tyre pressure monitoring into the GPS satellite navigation system.

The system, which Lionax calls SecuNavi, connects the tyre pressure receiving device into the LCD screen of a satnav system for display to the driver and to activate warnings when pressure gets to critical points.

But the device also allows the tyre pressure information to be integrated into data available for transmission back to fleet operators.

Lionax, which has Chinese and US research facilities, says it has already received orders for the new system from Chinese auto parts distributors and a Latin American group.

Though commercial vehicles are likely to be a big market, tyre pressure monitoring is mandatory on new cars and light trucks in the US and is likely to be mandatory in Europe from 2012.
