Auto-dimming mirrors set for exterior use on cars

3 March 2009

Dutch company Miortech has signed a deal with the Taiwanese research group ITRI to develop next-generation flexible displays and curved auto-dimming mirrors for exterior use on cars.

Miortech was set up in 2006 to commercialise electrowetting technology for auto-dimming rear-view car mirrors. The technology turns mirrors dark automatically when cars coming up from behind cause distracting glare, and was invented at Philips Research in Eindhoven.

The company already has a product called AlertMirror that incorporates information such as tyre pressure warnings on to a self-dimming rear-view mirror.

The new link is intended to develop exterior car mirrors. Miortech CEO Hans Fell said: "The cooperation with ITRI will enable us to accelerate the development of curved exterior car mirrors. These are preferred in a number of countries to reduce a potential dangerous blind spot."

Miortech claims that its self-dimming technology reacts much faster than standard electrochromic technology, turning dark in milliseconds when a car comes up behind.

ITRI, the Industrial Technology Research Institute in Taiwan, has formed a Display Technology Center that is interested in flexible displays for a variety of applications.

Miortech also plans to incorporate an integrated rear-camera display and other features into its products.
