Bright idea: LEDs provide better illumination and lower energy consumption

The new Audi A3 will be the first compact car with full LED headlamps. The lights offer better performance and lower energy consumption than even double xenon lamps, and will be a cost option on the premium C-segment model.

The Audi R8 sports car was the first model to offer full LED headlamps. The technology has cascaded through the firm's range of luxury sedans and the scale effects has made the technology affordable enough fro the C-segment.

If the option proves popular, it will help to make full LED lighting much more widely available: the A3 accounts for a fifth of Audi's sales. Magneti Marelli and Hella are leading suppliers of LED headlamps.
