Meritor Wabco has introduced next generation radar technology to its collision safety system, improving braking performance in commercial vehicles helping reduce the number of accidents and mitigate the severity of impacts.
The supplier's OnGuard system integrates collision warning, adaptive cruise control, active braking and collision mitigation, while improvements have also been made to its object tracking function.
Meritor Wabco president, Jon Morrison said: “Our next generation technology is a step change in the functionality of collision safety systems and we believe it represents a significant technological leap forward in reducing crashes involving commercial vehicles. With more than 3 billion miles logged on more than 25,000 units in the market, our depth of experience in this technology takes us to the next level to further reduce the risk of rear-end crashes on our roads and highways.”
The system has been developed so tracking is more robust and false warnings from very small, inanimate objects are minimised. Before evasive manoeuvres are performed the system scans adjacent lanes for objects, if the vehicle cannot perform an evasive manoeuvre and a rear-end collision is likely it can apply the brakes sooner. The radar can also be automatically aligned, making it more resistant to misalignment to ensure robust operation and removing the need for manual adjustments during installation, normal operating conditions and servicing.
The system has been designed so stationary object braking functionality can be introduced to the technology in the future.
