Tier One supplier Continental has developed a sensor concept that can determine the exact position of a vehicle on the road. The technology will allow for more accuracy in car-to-car and car-to-infrastructure communications.
Dr Peter Rieth, head of systems and technology in Continental’s chassis and safety division, said: “Since the vehicle’s precise position is needed for all car-to-x functions, the sensor has taken us an important step further.”
The Motion Information 2 X Provider sensor (M2XPro) collates date from other onboard systems including acceleration and yaw rate, wheel speed and steering angle. This is linked to GPS data allowing the vehicle’s relative position to be determined with greater precision.
“The sensor fusion within the M2XPro checks the plausibility of all the vehicle’s drive dynamics data and makes it available to other control units. Since the M2XPro is designed to make use of the sensors already installed, it can easily be integrated into existing vehicle architectures,” said Rieth.
